Hierophants
Global Hierophants
The office that guards the Rite, and the men and women who hold it across the jurisdictions of the Obedience.
The office of Hierophant
In the Egyptian Rite, the Hierophant is the one who reveals the sacred things — not by explaining them, but by conducting the candidate to the place where they may be received. The title is ancient: in the mysteries of Egypt and of Eleusis it named the officer entrusted with the highest instruction.
Within the Obedience, the Hierophant answers for the integrity of the Rite in a given jurisdiction: the accuracy of the rituals, the regularity of the initiations and the instruction of those who will one day take the same charge.
What the charge requires
-
Custody of the ritual
The texts, the degrees and their order are kept and transmitted exactly as received.
-
Instruction
The Hierophant teaches — officers, lodges and candidates — and answers for what is taught in his jurisdiction.
-
Discretion
What belongs to the temple stays in the temple. The office is exercised without display.
-
Continuity
Every Hierophant prepares his succession. The Rite must outlive those who serve it.
The Hierophants of the Obedience
The Obedience maintains Hierophants in the jurisdictions where it is established. New names are added to this list as the Chancery confirms them.
