International Obedience of the
Egyptian Rite of Memphis Misraim

A fraternal order dedicated to the preservation, transmission and living experience of the Sacred Mysteries, the Initiatic Tradition and the high principles of Wisdom, Light and Fraternity.

The Obedience

An ancient work, carried faithfully into the present

The I.O.E.R.M.M. is a fraternal order dedicated to Egyptian Freemasonry. Our purpose is not to explain the Mysteries from the outside, but to keep them alive: to preserve what was received, to transmit it whole to those who come after, and to give each member the means of experiencing it for himself.

An Obedience is the body that holds a rite together — that guards its rituals, watches over the regularity of its lodges and answers for the integrity of the work. Ours remains faithful to its foundations, its rites and its teachings, and measures every decision against them.

The three principles

Wisdom, Light and Fraternity

They are not mottoes. They are the measure by which the work of the Obedience is judged.

Wisdom

Study that does not stop at reading. Symbol, philosophy and ritual are given to be worked upon patiently, until understanding becomes conduct.

Light

The initiatic path is a passage from the outer to the inner. Light is received in degrees, and each degree asks of the candidate what the previous one prepared.

Fraternity

No one advances alone. The lodge is the place where the work is shared, corrected and sustained, and where a promise given is a promise kept.

What we do

Preserve. Transmit. Live.

  1. Preservation

The rituals, degrees and teachings of the Egyptian Rite are kept as they were received, without abridgement to suit the fashion of the moment.

  2. Transmission

What is preserved is passed on — from officer to officer, from lodge to lodge, in the proper form and to those properly prepared.

  3. Living experience

A rite that is only read is a dead letter. Ours is worked, in ceremony and in the conduct it asks for afterwards.
